Chidoka and The Statistics!!!
The Inoyotoro Foundation held its annual summit on the 8th of November,2013 at Le Meridien Hotel and Golf resort where it encouraged and rewarded hardworking and deserving teachers in public secondary schools. It offered the organization and other discussants the opportunity to talk about the ills of the educational sector in Nigeria and provide possible solutions.
The above stated is what the Guest speaker,Osita Chidoka(Corps Marshal of FRSC) did,in clear and unambigous terms!!He delivered a beautifully crafted,thought-provoking and mindblowing masterpiece that strongly elucidated on the ills of our educational system in Akwa Ibom and Nigeria in general.The comparative analysis of the educational sector he did between Akwa Ibom and Ogun States was heartbreaking as well as incisive.His analysis was spot on and he held the entire crowd spellbound.He churned out details and statistics(some of them gory) that were intellectually suffocating and painful,considering how much we have received as statutory allocations over the years.
However,few days after delivering the public lecture,the social media was awash and replete with comments and criticisms for and against Osita Chidoka's lecture. Some have labelled him an "Akpabio hater","whistleblower" and an attention seeker!
This forced me to revisit the video clips of that powerful lecture which is on www.2479ja.tv and I asked myself the following questions;
i)What did Osita Chidoka really say wrong that would have elicited such backlash? ii)The statistics he churned out,are they verifiable?? iii)If these statistics are true, Who is to blame? is it Osita Chidoka or the Government of the day? iv)The critics and cynics of this lecture delivered by Osita Chidoka,how many of their children attend these public schools? v)Can they honestly compare Akwa Ibom's educational system with that of Ogun and Osun states,who receive far less than Akwa Ibom in terms of revenue?
Furthermore, critics of the public lecture have dished to the unsuspecting public, distorted versions of the lecture. However,for posterity sake,the full video clip of that lecture by Osita Chidoka is on www.2479ja.tv
